Something like this?

Thirty Frames Per Second: The Visionary Art of the Music Video (2000)
by Steven Reiss, Neil Feineman, Jeff Ayeroff, Michael Stipe (Preface)

What do you need it for? Which direction (cultural studies,...)?

there is a series about 'VJing' in the I-DJ magazine: www.i-dj.co.uk
www.audiovisualizers.net, www.vjcentral.com
or just "google" your way to it ...

That doesn't quiet answer my question. You can approach the subject from different directions (art, design, psychology, sociology,...). What are you studying?

Some years ago we did some reseach regarding the psychological effects of music and visuals (there is not much material available). You also have studies about youth/sub-cultures but as far as I know there is also not much about VJing in there.

In case you are looking for more general literature, click here.

u are right..
i studied a 5 years long course: comunication with multimedia specialization.
i dont wanna write a paper that want to be exaustive about vjing, could not be possible, maybe, but i studied author like lev manovich, bolter etc. with a cultural-humanistic approach to new technology. a mix of techical cultural. so vj argument helps me to reveal some caracteristics about new.(post.super.meta).media. i'm linking this especially to cinema (in a sense as an opposite for vjing) media hystory and new media studies.
this paper has a net-map structure, not really linear like a+b=c.
if u can give some link or stuff about the research u did can be interesting for me to hav e alook of it.
thanksalot

any pointers?

Postby strawberrypinstripe » Wed Mar 09, 2005 10:24 pm

hello, just wondering if either of you could point me in the right direction for articles relating to the VJing as i am writing about the visual representation of music as a non visual art (eg. in art and design media) for a second year contextual studies essay. i have been looking at warp records, chicks on speed, the hive collective in liverpool, the fluxus art movement and the Expanded Cinema book by Gene Youngblood. any ideas as to where i can get some information which would give me some insights into the influences in VJing as a postmodern art form?

many thanks!

I know a few interesting sources:

http://www.vj-book.com/ (free pdf online)

http://www.solu.org/LIVE_CINEMA.pdf

A "not that interesting" book, but nice interviews
http://feralhouse.com/press/thevjbook/
(available on amazon)

I really like D-Fuse's book:

Another one, but I have no idea about how good it could be:
